Shang-Chi Movie Images Show Detailed Look At Marvel Superhero Costume

MARVEL’S newest hero is ready for action in new images from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

After the successful released of Black Widow, all eyes are now turning towards the MCU’s next movie release. Shang-Chi will arrive in theaters on September 3, and unlike Black Widow, it will only be available in theaters.

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie was once scheduled to arrive earlier this year, but the coronavirus pandemic delayed it by several months. Luckily, the wait is almost over.

Shang-Chi stars Marvel newcomer Simu Liu as the titular hero, who in the comics is known as the Master of Kung Fu. Though Shang-Chi’s origins have been altered slightly to erase some outdated stereotypes, the essence of it will remain the same. By the time the movie begins, Shang-Chi will have spent years trying to distance himself from his father’s criminal empire.

However, the Mandarin (Tony Leung) is ready to welcome his son back with open arms, making for the ultimate family conflict. Shang-Chi also stars Awkwafina, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Benedict Wong, and Michelle Yeoh.

As Shang-Chi draws ever closer to release, Empire has unveiled fresh images from the film. In addition to a new shot of Shang-Chi’s bus fight with Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu), there’s a closer, more detailed look at his red superhero costume. It looks even more impressive up close than it does in the trailers.

The costume is often one of the most hotly anticipated aspects of a superhero movie, and Shang-Chi’s was revealed early on with the release of the first poster. It feels different than other MCU costumes, but it still manages to retain the spirit of the comics.

It’ll be interesting to see how Shang-Chi comes to wear it in his solo movie, seeing as he’s attempted to distance himself from an action-packed life. Of course, plenty of action will still find him, and Shang-Chi‘s stunts have been hyped as some of the best in the entire MCU.

Shang-Chi is the first new hero to lead his own solo project in the MCU’s Phase 4, so there’s a lot of interest in seeing how he will fit into the franchise. The action-centric look in the above pictures feels right at home with the MCU, but as the Shang-Chi trailers have hinted, the movie is also a family drama at its heart. Marvel has found success in telling stories grounded in families (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy), so this could be another win for the franchise.
