‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Continues To Dominate At The Box Office, On Track To Surpass ‘Jurassic World’

TOP Gun: Maverick continues to dominate at the box office and is now on track to surpass the domestic total of 2015’s Jurassic World.

Coming more than 35 years after the release of the original Top Gun, the Joseph Kosinski-directed sequel sees the return of Tom Cruise’s hotshot pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The film sees Maverick in a leadership role this time around, training a new batch of Top Gun recruits for a dangerous mission over enemy territory.

Top Gun: Maverick had a strong opening weekend box office haul when it hit theaters in May, but the film has continued to perform well even months later. The film quickly became Cruise’s highest-grossing film of all time and became only the second movie since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 to earn over $1 billion at the global box office.

The film has benefitted from strong reviews and positive word-of-mouth, helping the Top Gun sequel surpass Titanic’s opening run last month to become Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing movie of all time. Top Gun: Maverick’s impressive box office performance is also set to give Cruise the biggest payday of his career, likely surpassing $100 million.

As per new report from Forbes, Top Gun: Maverick is set to potentially pass another box office milestone, surpassing the domestic haul of the original Jurassic World. The Top Gun sequel is expected to pull in $8.83 million in its tenth weekend, likely putting the film past $650 million domestic, which is well within reach of Jurassic World’s $652 million.

If Top Gun: Maverick does surpass Jurassic World, it will become the seventh-biggest domestic earner of all time. The film’s tenth-weekend performance is also impressive in its own right, only behind that of Avatar and Titanic.

Earning rave reviews right out of the gate, Top Gun: Maverick has seen very small weekend-to-weekend box office drops since its release, likely due both to the strong word-of-mouth from audiences and the film’s aggressive pre-release marketing campaign.

After several years of uncertainty regarding the future of movie theaters, Top Gun: Maverick is further proof after the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home last year that audiences are still more than willing to take a trip to the cinema for select films.

The Top Gun sequel was hit with numerous delays several years ago, both due to COVID-19 and reshoots, but the film’s most recent box office milestone is further proof that waiting to release it was the right move.

For those hoping to catch Top Gun: Maverick on digital platforms, there’s still no word yet on when the movie might be leaving theaters, but its performance would suggest that it still has legs, even 2 months after its release. It remains to be seen how the world of Top Gun will live on beyond Top Gun: Maverick, but the film’s box office performance demonstrates that there’s clearly an appetite among audiences for a third film in the franchise.

With the film performing as well as it is, it’s likely that Paramount will also be keen to revisit the iconic world of Top Gun: Maverick. (source: screenrant.com)
