F9 star, Tyrese Gibson, reveals that Fast & Furious 10 and 11 will shoot back-to-back.
The ninth Fast & Furious movie has yet to premiere in the United States on June 25, and it is already breaking pandemic box-office records due to its performance in international markets.
Furious 7 was the first in the series to gross a billion dollars worldwide and the last few installments have made it one the most successful movie franchises ever, as its box office returns recently surpassed $6 billion globally.
The latest chapter in the Fast & Furious saga will finally debut in the United States a little over a week from now, June 25, after a long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
F9 will pack a few more changes of pace for the ever-changing franchise, including John Cena’s sudden appearance as Dominic Toretto’s brother, Jakob, and Sung Kang’s reappearance as Han. F9 will also finally head to space after years of speculation from fans.
However, F9 won’t be the end of the beloved franchise. Lin confirmed last year that the Fast and Furious saga would end with number 11, which we can only refer to as Fast 11 until Universal busts out like The F11nal Fast.
Because this a franchise built on the back of “family,” you can assume all the major players will return for one last Fast, including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang.
Now, in an interview ahead of F9’s release, Tyrese Gibson revealed that director Justin Lin is planning to shoot Fast & Furious 10 and 11 back-to-back.
The films will act as a two-part finale for the original saga, and filming them back-to-back will ensure a shorter wait time between their releases.
Gibson told Collider:
I have definitely asked some questions about 10 and 11. It has been confirmed we are going to shoot back-to-back and get both in the can. Which is interesting. I’m hearing that we’re going to touch a lot of continents between the two. I cannot say where, but a lot. The higher-ups that are involved in this franchise are specifically aware of the die-hard fans and supporters around the world. We all carry a particular torch of responsibility and knowing there is a beast, and we need to feed that beast and give them what they want, what they love, and what they’re used to.
Once upon a time, Fast & Furious 10 was scheduled for a 2021 release, but that was scrapped due to F9’s pandemic-related delays, currently leaving the final two entries without a scheduled release date.
Although Lin has been confirmed as director, there has been no word on either of the film’s casts, but it is safe to assume all the franchise mainstays will return for one final ride. The saga’s screenwriting stalwart, Chris Morgan, is also expected to pen both scripts.
Filming the final two installments of a franchise is hardly unprecedented, in fact, it is actually quite common. Harry Potter broke up the final book, The Deathly Hallows, into two movies and shot them back-to-back. The Hunger Games then followed suit with Mockingjay.
Director Christopher McQuarrie had plans to shoot Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 back-to-back, but these plans were disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Now, after F9, Fast & Furious will be the latest franchise to culminate with a two-part finale filmed back-to-back.
