VIN Diesel has taken to social media to suggest that Furya, the fourth film in the Chronicles of Riddick saga may not be too far off.
Based on the character created by screenwriting due and brothers Ken and Jim Wheat, Diesel made his debut as the gruff, sci-fi antihero Riddick in 2000’s Pitch Black.
Despite working with a modest budget and opening to mixed reviews, the film’s subsequent release on home media turned it into a cult sensation and would go on to spawn two sequels, as well as a series of videogame tie-ins, novels, and motion comics.
As early as 2014 Diesel had announced that Universal Studios was looking to produce a fourth film in the Riddick franchise, and they would be aiming for an R-rating which would serve as an origin story for the fan-favorite character. Supposedly titled Furya, original Pitch Black director David Twohy reportedly completed the script for the new film and provided it to Diesel in July 2019.
Earlier this year, during a promotional interview for F9, Diesel also suggested that the film was finally “moving towards filming.”
While it’s been seven years since Diesel first hinted at a new Riddick outing, it looks like things are quickly surging ahead, and it may not be too much longer until fans finally get to see the final product for themselves. Taking to Instagram, Diesel revealed that he had just completed an “incredible meeting” and suggested that “Furia [sic] may be closer than you think.” Check out Diesel’s original post below:
While Diesel has been preoccupied of late with the ever-expanding Fast and the Furious franchise, it would seem the busy actor has not lost sight of his other popular onscreen roles.
Not only is Diesel looking to reprise the role of his sci-fi antihero, but recent reports also suggest he’s on track to return to the role Xander Cage from the xXx action series. On top of all this, Diesel is also set to return to provide the voice of every Marvel fans’ favorite walking tree, Groot, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Hopefully, after many years’ worth of teases and announcements, this latest reveal from Diesel will bode well for an expedited return to the Furyan warrior and mercenary. No doubt fans will be clamoring to hear more about an expected release date and marking their calendars in anticipation of Riddick’s return to the big screen.
In the meantime, fans of the Chronicles of Riddick can also potentially look forward to Diesel joining another big sci-fi franchise with next year’s Avatar 2.
