‘Logan’ Star Shares Key Advice Hugh Jackman Gave Her

LOGAN star Dafne Keen shares the advice Hugh Jackman gave her on set of the X-Men film.

Jackman made his debut as Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men and went on to reprise the role nine times over nearly two decades, effectively ending his character’s run with 2017’s Logan (though he will be returning and making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Deadpool 3).

Logan served as a departure for Jackman’s Wolverine franchise, with a quieter and darker story centered on Logan’s mission to protect the young mutant X-23, also known as Laura (Keen) and get her to safety. The movie was Keen’s debut as Logan’s clone/biological daughter and set up a larger future for her character as Logan’s successor after the titular character’s death.

Having made her feature debut on Logan, Keen has gone on to star as Lyra in HBO Max’s critically acclaimed fantasy series His Dark Materials and will be featured in upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte.

During a conversation with Marie Claire, Keen spoke about the plethora of advice she received while filming Logan, from both Jackman and director James Mangold. The young actor stated that Mangold’s advice was more craft-focused, telling her to “always go full out” in her performances, which has become “a top tip of [hers].” One of Jackman’s key tips for Keen was to treat the crew “equally” while on set.

He was the most brilliant person with the crew, he taught me how the distance between cast and crew is wrong and that everyone is to be treated equally. He was close with everyone from the crew, he knew everyone’s names and would get people lottery tickets each week. I learnt the ropes from him and feel very lucky to have been taught that by him.”

Given the natural on-screen chemistry and strong off-screen bond between Keen and Jackman, viewers have been vocal about wanting to see more of their relationship. However, since Logan ended with Wolverine’s death, the possibility of Laura and Logan reuniting has always seemed unlikely. The news about Jackman returning as Wolverine for Deadpool 3 reignited the potential for Laura and Logan to meet again, this time officially within the MCU’s timeline.

While many Wolverine and X-Men fans have expressed enthusiasm over Jackman finally interacting on-screen with Reynolds’ Deadpool, some have worried that Jackman’s return as the hero cheapens the moving farewell to the character executed by Logan, which is widely considered one of the best comic book adaptations and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Of course, given Logan’s futuristic setting, Deadpool 3 does not have to undo Logan’s death in the 2017 film and can merely take place before those events. If that winds up being the case, it’s unlikely that Laura will be featured in the movie since she was born in 2018 and didn’t meet Wolverine until the events of Logan.

If Deadpool 3 features a variant of Logan’s Wolverine from a different universe, it’s possible that a Laura variant could appear and be introduced to him once again. Alternately, Laura could appear in a post-credits scene or as a cameo within the movie. However, it’s more likely that she will be left out of Deadpool 3 and instead hopefully return in a future MCU project once more mutants start making their way into the franchise and the X-Men setup begins.
