‘A Haunting In Venice,’ Needs To Make At Least $140M To Succeed At The Box Office

Disney and 20th Century have not officially announced how much it cost to make A Haunting in Venice. This leaves room for estimates and comparison to previous installments to try and deduce its budget. It is possible that A Haunting in Venice carries a $70 million budget.

When the franchise began in 2017, Murder on the Orient Express was made for a mere $55 million. The movie’s box office success allowed Death on the Nile’s budget to balloon to $90 million, which was partially due to using more CGI for locations, landing more big names, and delays caused by COVID.

A Haunting in Venice has another moderate budget for the Hercule Poirot franchise, setting a high bar for its box office run. Kenneth Branagh and 20th Century found immediate success when it came to bringing Agatha Christie’s novels to audiences again. Murder on the Orient Express was a sizable box office hit on a rather small budget compared to many other franchises. After some decline in performance with Death on the Nile and Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century, the cost to make A Haunting in Venice was expected to change. Doing so could help keep the franchise alive by lowering what box office it needs.

As budgets ballooned across Hollywood thanks to the pandemic, A Haunting in Venice’s cast and on-location filming in theory would raise the price of Kenneth Branagh’s latest movie. It features recognizable faces like Tina Fey, recent Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh, and Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly.

It is unlikely that even A Haunting in Venice as a horror movie helped it be made for as cheap as Murder on the Orient Express due to its pandemic-inflated production, but it does seem like a safe bet that Disney and 20th Century would limit spending so it would not reach or exceed Death on the Nile. Since the latter only made $137.3 million at the worldwide box office, the studios likely did not want to put too much money into the threequel and hinder its chances of becoming a box office success.

If the estimated budget is close to being accurate, A Haunting in Venice’s box office might only need to make $140 million worldwide to be deemed a hit. That would be double the movie’s budget and surpass Death on the Nile’s total. Considering Disney and 20th Century were happy enough with the sub-$140M total before to greenlight a sequel, A Haunting in Venice exceeding that figure on a lower cost would help increase the likelihood of a fourth Hercule Poirot movie directed by Kenneth Branagh happening.

A Haunting in Venice is now showing Philippines cinemas, scheduled to be released in the United States on September 15, 2023, by Disney and 20th Century Studios.
