‘James Bond’ Producer Says Next 007 Actor Decision Will Take Time

BARBARA Broccoli, the producer of the James Bond series, admits that deciding on the next 007 actor is a significant decision and will take time.

Most recently, the secret agent has been portrayed by actor Daniel Craig since 2006, beginning with Casino Royale. Craig’s portrayal of the character won him critical acclaim from fans and critics alike, and the bittersweet announcement of his departure came prior to the release of his final Bond film, 2021’s No Time To Die.

The announcement of Craig’s departure over two years ago has left fans and news outlets buzzing with questions over who might play the iconic 007 in future films, and their increasing impatience mirrors this excitement as well as the significance of Broccoli and producing partner Michael G. Wilson‘s impending decision.

Rumors continue to buzz fervently around who might play Bond next. Despite that, though, there has been little outward progress on the Bond search, even despite reports that the announcement could’ve happened by now.

Currently, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, and Henry Cavill are included in the mix of rumored potential actors for the next Bond in what will be the franchise’s 26th installment.

The producer tells Variety in a recent interview that deciding on the next actor to play James Bond might take some more time. Speaking on the opening night of Macbeth on Broadway (a production that stars Craig), Broccoli explains that due to its overarching implications for not only the role but the future of the franchise, it is a momentous decision:

“It’s a big decision. It’s not just casting a role. It’s about a whole rethink about where we’re going. I’m just here celebrating one of the greatest actors on the planet, Daniel Craig.”

As her statement confirms, Broccoli continues to support Craig professionally even after his departure from the role of Bond. In fact, Broccoli produced the aforementioned play that Craig currently stars in. Her decision to currently focus on the brilliance of Craig’s career in the wake of his exit, rather than obsessing over the franchise’s future, is admirable. Still, one does wish that the announcement of the next James Bond was happening sooner rather than later.

Notably, Broccoli’s connection to James Bond and thus the significance of her impending decision dates back to the franchise’s humble origins – her father, Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli was the producer of most of the original Bond films including its very first, and oversaw the transition of the films from low-budget pursuits to an extravagant, high-budget franchise.

Broccoli and her half-brother inherited their father’s production company Eon Productions in 1995, a year before his death. Due to her father’s pivotal role in Hollywood and the Bond franchise during her childhood, Broccoli grew up around the Bond film sets and thus possesses a great knowledge of the series’ history as well as the filmmaking and producing process.

Therefore, while the continually agonizing wait for the announcement might be frustrating for many fans, Broccoli’s history with the franchise and commitment to taking proper time for thoughtful consideration in finding the perfect actor for the role should provide reassurance to fans that the future of James Bond is in good hands.
