Encanto’s First Trailer Promises A Magical, Musical Disney Adventure

DISNEY released the teaser trailer for their upcoming animated musical film, Encanto.

The film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, is full of magic. The movie is set in a colorful and magical hidden village in the mountains of Colombia, and it focuses on the Madrigal family.

The Madrigals, however, are not your run-of-the-mill family, as each member possesses “exceptional, fantastical, and magical” powers such as super strength, shapeshifting, and plant manipulation.

The only exception is 15-year-old Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), who seems to lack any sort of unique power and is struggling to fit in with the rest of her family.

The rest of Encanto‘s cast features mostly actors and actresses of Latin American descent, including María Cecilia Botero, Wilmer Valderrama (That ’70’s Show), Adassa, Diane Guerrero (Orange is the New Black), Mauro Castillo, Angie Cepeda (Love in the Time of Cholera), Jessica Darrow, Rhenzy Feliz (Marvel’s Runaways), and Carolina Gaitan.

In Disney tradition, Encanto is also a musical, featuring songs by Lin Manuel-Miranda, the man behind Broadway musical Hamilton and In the Heights. Miranda said in a tweet that he has been writing the film’s songs for the past four years.

Encanto is directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, who both worked on Zootopia.

Encanto is set to hit theaters on November 24th, making it the first major animated film from Disney to not be released straight to Disney Plus since theaters first shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The studio has spent the last year and a half shifting almost all of its major animated releases from both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar — including Soul, Luca, and Raya and the Last Dragon — either straight to its streaming service or with concurrent releases in both theaters and on Disney Plus.
