‘Old-style Ginebra’ armas ni Cone sa semis vs Bolts

Sa kanilang pagpasok sa semifinal round ay inasahang muling maglalaro ang Barangay Ginebra sa tinatawag ni head coach Tim Cone na ‘old-style Ginebra basketball’.
Ito ang ginamit ni Cone sa 81-73 pagsibak ng No. 1 Gin Kings sa No. 8 Rain or Shine Elasto Painters sa kanilang quarterfinals match sa 2020 PBA Philippine Cup.
“We got to go play some old-style Ginebra basketball,” wika ng two-time PBA Grand Slam champion mentor. “We went back to the 90s, played that kind of style of basketball.”
Haharapin ng Ginebra sa best-of-five semifinals series ang Meralco na kanilang winalis sa tatlong beses na bakbakan nila sa Finals ng PBA Governor’s Cup.
“They have a very, very good team, a lot of quality players on their team, but we’ll be out there fighting,” sabi naman ni one-time PBA Grand Slam mentor Norman Black.
Sinibak ng No. 5 Bolts ang No. 4 at five-time champions na San Miguel Beermen, nagbitbit ng ‘twice-to-beat’ advantage sa quarterfinals, matapos kunin ang 78-71 panalo noong Biyernes at ang 90-68 tagumpay noong Linggo sa kanilang ‘do-or-die’ game.
Ito ang unang semifinals stint ng Meralco sa isang All-Filipino Conference matapos bumalik sa PBA noong 2010.
Samantala, itinuring ni Phoenix coach Topex Robinson na ‘magical’ ang kanilang pagpasok sa semis matapos ang 89-88 paglusot sa No. 7 Magnolia sa quarterfinals.
“It’s just so magical for us,” ani Robinson. “We’re just so blessed to be here, to grind it out with one of the best teams, a well-coached team.”
Lalabanan ng Fuel Masters ang No. 3 TNT Tropang Giga, pinatalsik ang No. 6 Alaska, 104-83, sa quarterfinals, para sa best-of-five semifinals wars na magsisimula bukas.
