Willem Dafoe Reveals His Idea for a Sequel to Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’

SPIDER-MAN: No Way Home star Willem Dafoe admitted in his interview with GQ, that he’s seriously thought about portraying a version of Batman’s nemesis the Joker in a sequel to Todd Phillips’ Joker.
“There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker imposter,” the actor says.
“So it would be possible to have not dueling Jokers but someone that says to be the Joker that isn’t the Joker. And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly if you had Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did.”
Dafoe further explained that he’s “fantasized about” pitching the story as a sequel, but has yet to talk to anybody about the project in an official capacity.
No stranger to playing villainous characters, the actor noted that people have been telling him he’s the perfect man to play the Joker for decades.
However, he’s probably best known among comic fans for portraying Dr. Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002) and Jon Watts‘ No Way Home (2021).
The most recent Spider-Man film saw Dafoe’s Green Goblin being resurrected and pulled into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse. No Way Home also marked the debut of a new, more comics-accurate Green Goblin mask, which Dafoe recently said came about following criticism of his costume in the Raimi film.
“We heard it enough that it was probably a consideration, to change it up a little bit,” he said.
In his interview with GQ, he spoke about why he seems to be drawn to playing villains, admitting, “I don’t know what that is.”
The actor’s other notable bad guy roles include Bobby Peru in Wild at Heart, Gas in eXistenZ, Max Schreck in Shadow of a Vampire, Donald Kimball in American Psycho, and FBI Special Agent Paul Smecker in The Boondocks Saints.
While Dafoe’s involvement in a future Joker-related project remains uncertain, it was reported after the release of Joker that Phillips had already signed on to direct a sequel.
Phoenix, however, said he didn’t know anything about reprising the role. (source: cbr.com)
