Andrew Garfield Enjoyed Lying About His Role In ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

ANDREW Garfield, who portrayed Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man film series, enjoyed lying about his role in  Spider-Man: No Way Home.   Garfield reprised as the webslinger in the latest installment of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series, which takes place in the MCU. Tobey Maguire, who has also portrayed Peter Parker in the past in Sam Raimi’s trilogy, joined Garfield and appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home as well.

The two previous Spider-Man weren’t the only actors to reprise their roles from previous Spider-Man films and audiences were treated to multiple iconic and memorable villains. Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin/Norman Osborn also returned in big screen. Despite being from older film series which were unconnected to the MCU, the Spider-Men and their various villains were brought into Holland’s film through the introduction of the multiverse thanks to Doctor Strange.

In the film, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange brings the characters into the universe of Holland’s Spider-Man by miscasting a memory spell, which ends up having disastrous consequences.

Garfield shared that he enjoyed lying about his surprise appearance in the film.

The actor had spent much of 2021 denying that he would be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, despite multiple set-leaks and intense speculation. Garfield described his committed deception as “weirdly enjoyable,” though admitted that it was hard at times, and he questioned whether or not it was the right thing to do.

In his interview with TheWrap, Garfield says, “It was stressful, I’m not gonna lie. It was rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable. It was like this massive game of Werewolf that I was playing with journalists and with people guessing, and it was very fun.

“There were moments where I was like, ‘God, I hate lying.’ I don’t like to lie and I’m not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game. And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do.

“I placed myself in that position of, Well, what would I want to know? Would I want to be toyed with? Would I want to be lied to? Would I want to be kept on my toes guessing? Would I want to discover it when I went to the theatre? Would I want to be guessing, guessing, guessing?

“I would want the actor to do an incredibly good job at convincing me he wasn’t in it. And then I would want to lose my mind in the theatre when my instinct was proven right. That’s what I would want.”

The appearances from previous Spider-Man characters are an integral part of the film, as the two older Spider-Men help Holland’s Peter Parker deal with his emotions and succeed in his aim to ‘cure’ villains, rather than kill them.

The return of Garfield and Maguire works best as a surprise, and like with Avengers: Endgame, fans have been working to avoid spoilers and not spoil the film themselves.

Out of the three adaptations, Garfield’s own Spider-Man series was the least well-received, both agreed by audiences and critics.

Most agreed to that Garfield’s performance was one of the aspects of the series that did work, and with the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor has generated a renewed interest in his series and its future possibilities.

Some fans have shared their enthusiasm for a new Amazing Spider-Man film, which would give Garfield the chance to complete his trilogy as Maguire and Holland both did.
