ANGELINA Jolie reveals why she said yes to Marvel’s Eternals.
The next MCU movie after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals shifts the focus away from the better known Marvel superheroes and instead introduces a new, eponymous group of superpowered individuals based on Jack Kirby obscure comic book team. The movie navigates the adventures of the titular, immortal alien race as it emerges from the shadows in the wake of the arrival of their evil counterparts, The Deviants, on Earth.
Directed by Academy Award-Winner Chloé Zhao, Eternals was originally supposed to hit theaters last year, but it got delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Currently, Disney is committed to giving Eternals an exclusive theatrical run in the United States. However, the film’s November 5 release date is mostly up in the air, with the studio discussing whether Eternals should be pushed back or if it would receive a hybrid release.
And, despite the uncertainty, the anticipation for the movie remains unwavered. This, in part, can be credited to Eternals‘ star-studded cast, which includes high-profile celebrities like Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, and Kumail Nanjiani. Perhaps the biggest name attached to the movie is Angelina Jolie, who plays the elite warrior, Thena. At the moment, the full depth of Jolie’s character in the movie isn’t clear, although the actress has voiced her excitement about taking up the project.
In a conversation published in the Fall 2021 issue of Disney’s D23 Magazine (obtained via The Direct), Angelina Jolie opened up about the reason why she chose to join Eternals.
The Maleficent star said that she wasn’t concerned with the length of her character. Rather it was the opportunity to be a member of a decidedly ”diverse family” that motivated her to take up the movie.
“This was the real reason I wanted to make the film. It was to be part of such a diverse family, and it really didn’t matter to me what the size of the role would be.”
Jolie is clearly thrilled to be a part of Eternals. Previously the Unbroken actress even admitted that the movie is “certainly the biggest thing” she’s ever done, which really means something as she has been a part of several major blockbusters over the past two decades. In fact, Jolie hasn’t cut any corners for her new job. Instead, Jolie has participated in intense training to prepare for her role as Thena, which involved maneuvering weapons like swords, spears, and staffs, as well as taking up Ballet. This signifies the actress’ commitment to her character, giving fans some hints about just how grand the scale of the new movie would be.
Over the years, J0lie has mostly been under the spotlight all by herself. This time around, she is sharing the limelight with an entire ensemble, yet she has no qualms about getting only a divided portion of fans’ attention. Surely, as the leader of the Eternals, Jolie will have a very important role to play in the film.
But instead of her independent scenes, it’s her chemistry with her co-stars that will be stressed more. Clearly, Jolie is aware of that, as, after all, being a part of a diversified ensemble was the main motivation for her to do the movie. So far, Jolie impressed audiences with her solo acts, but now fans should gear up to be wooed by her coordinated performance in Eternals, as the actress has really dedicated herself to the movie.
