Godzilla vs. Kong Sequel Filming Later This Year In Australia

A new report reveals that the sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong will start filming later this year in Australia. Acting as the fourth installment in Legendary Entertainment’s Monsterverse, Godzilla vs. Kong sees the two titular titans face off in a battle of epic proportions.
The film follows the events of Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and was a hit with audiences around the world, raking in over $469 million at the box office globally.
Godzilla vs. Kong is directed by Adam Wingard, who is best known for his work on films like You’re Next, The Guest, and Death Note. After numerous delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film ultimately premiered in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day, eventually becoming the most pirated movie of 2021.
Godzilla vs. Kong stars both new and returning characters, with the likes of Millie Bobby Brown, Alexander Skarsgård, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza González, Julian Dennison, Lance Reddick, and Kyle Chandler rounding out the film’s cast.
According to a new report from Deadline, Godzilla vs. Kong 2 is moving forward. Filming on the sequel is expected to commence later this year in Queensland, Australia. Both Godzilla vs. Kong and Kong: Skull Island were also filmed in the region, delivering major economic boosts and creating hundreds of jobs for local film crews. Details regarding the plot of the upcoming sequel are currently unknown, as is who will be directing it.
Although Wingard is not yet confirmed to return to the director’s chair for Godzilla vs. Kong 2, he has previously expressed interest in a sequel, stating that he would “absolutely love to continue” with the franchise. Godzilla vs. Kong introduced several interesting ideas to explore further in a second installment, the biggest of which is perhaps the reveal of the Hollow Earth, a gigantic subterranean ecosystem that houses titans similar to Kong and Godzilla.
Wingard himself previously explained that he would like to explore the Hollow Earth more in-depth, saying, “I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the titans come from.” The director explained that the first Gozilla vs. Kong “tee[d] up some mystery,” which he would like to see “resolved and explored and pushed to the next level.”
The success of Godzilla vs. Kong – at the height of the pandemic, no less – made a sequel incredibly likely. The sequel announcement comes several months after it was revealed that a new Monsterverse series is in the works at Apple, with no word yet on whether the two projects will interact from a storytelling perspective.
Considering his willingness to return to the Monsterverse franchise and the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, it also seems likely that Wingard will return to the director’s chair once more. No release date for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel has been announced just yet, with that news expected to come as the film gets closer to entering production
