‘GOTG 3’ Director James Gunn Reveals About the ‘High Evolutionary’ and His Visit To Earth

JAMES Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has revealed more information about the High Evolutionary and his visit to Earth.

For the original Guardians of the Galaxy team’s final MCU adventure, James Gunn introduced Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary, a sadistic villain who was revealed to have created Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon.

Marvel Studios significantly changed the High Evolutionary’s story from Marvel Comics, so instead of being a human originating from Earth, he is now an alien who visited humanity’s planet.

To celebrate the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn took to Twitter, answering questions from fans about the Phase 5 film. During one exchange, Gunn was questioned about the design of the film’s new location, Counter-Earth, with one fan pondering what decade they were supposed to be in. Gunn responded, noting that they’re in the present day but that Counter-Earth was based on the High Evolutionary’s memories of the 1980s, as this was when the High Evolutionary visited Earth.

2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy opened with Peter Quill being abducted from Earth by Yondu Udonta’s faction of Ravagers. This event took place in 1988, a time period which informed Guardians of the Galaxy’s soundtrack and human references for both James Gunn’s original film and the 2017 sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The fact that Gunn revealed the High Evolutionary visited Earth in the 1980s also suggests that he acquired his collection of raccoons during that time period, implying that Rocket was abducted from Earth during the same decade as Peter Quill.

While the High Evolutionary’s visit to Earth in the 1980s informed his design of Counter-Earth – down to its residents’ clothing, cars, and housing designs – this could also allow for further human connections to be made to the High Evolutionary.

In Marvel Comics, the High Evolutionary is inspired by the work of Nathaniel Essex, the X-Men villain known as Mister Sinister, so perhaps the pair had dealings in the MCU during the High Evolutionary’s visit in the 1980s.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 reveals could be paving the way for many exciting stories in the MCU’s future. The blockbuster movie is still showing in PH cinemas nationwide. (source: screenrant.com)
