Ridley Scott, Back In A New Historical Epic Film ‘The Last Duel’

DIRECTOR Ridley Scott is back with a new historical epic film titled The Last Duel, starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck, based on a real-life trial by combat.

The director of the films The MartianBlack Hawk Down, and Gladiator will now tell a story set in the midst of the Hundred Years War.

The film is based on the actual events written in Eric Jager’s book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France. It tells the story of the respected knight Jean de Carrouges, his wife Marguerite, and the well-revered Norman squire Jacques Le Gris.

When Le Gris assaults Marguerite, the woman refuses to stay silent and steps forward to accuse him of the crime. This results to a trial by combat which pits Le Gris against Jean de Carrouges in a grueling fight to the death.

“When etiquette, social aspirations and justice were driven by the codes of chivalry, the consequences for defying the institutions of the time – the Church, the nobility at court, a teenage king – could be severe. For a woman navigating these violent times, one who had no legal standing without the support of her husband, the stakes were even higher,” the press release for the film teased.

The movie is Damon and Affleck’s first writing collaboration since their breakthrough movie Good Will Hunting back in 1995, and it’s Scott’s first film since All the Money in the World and Alien: Covenant, both of which were released in 2017.

This is one of two new Scott movies that will be showing this year — the biographical drama House of Gucci, starring Driver and Lady Gaga, arrives in November.

The Last Duel is produced by 20th Century Studios and set to release on October 15.
