TINATAYANG 4,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) ang gumamit ng libreng byahe pabalik ng Pinas hindi lamang isang beses kundi limang beses sa kasagsagan ng COVID-19 pandemic.
Hiniling ng Commission on Audit (COA) sa Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) na ipaliwanag kung paano ang 3,707 OFWs ay gumamit ng makailang ulit na emergency repatriation program sa pagitan ng April 2020 hanggang May 2022.
Ang OFWs na nakalista bilang “in distress,” ay nakakuha ng “free accommodation, meals, at sakay sa kani-kanilang destinasyon.”
“Overseas Filipino in distress is defined as those who have “medical, psycho-social, or legal problem requiring treatment, counseling, or legal representation” under the Migrant Workers And Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995,” ayon sa ulat.
“It appeared that the repatriation program was utilized by these OFWs for their regular trips back home after their contracts expired and not from distress as can be gleaned by the number of times these OFWs availed of the program,” ayon sa COA.
Idinagdag pa ng komisyon na ang “improper evaluation” ng mga OFWs na ito “depleted scarce government resources” at “exhausted funds” na dapat gamitin para sa “eligible OFWs in distress.”
Natunton ng COA ang 3,707 OFWs sa Northern Mindanao, subalit sinabi ng regional office ng OWWA na tinanggap lamang nila at inasikaso ang mga OFWs matapos makatanggap ng komunikasyon mula sa central office.
Samantala, tiniyak naman ng OWWA Northern Mindanao, sa COA na kokonsultahin nito ang central office para masiguro na ang emergency repatriation ay iginugol sa mga eligible. (Daris Jose)
