NOONG kasagsagan ng COVID-19 pandemic ay ilang beses nang naranasan ni Carla Abella ang lock-in taping, at mas pabor siya sa ganung situwasyon.

“Opo, pero kung tutuusin po hindi ko na po naabutan yung lock-in sa Voltes V: Legacy.

“That was the time na medyo lumuwag na po yung restrictions in terms of sa production, sa taping. Ito naman pong aking bagong teleserye na kasama po ako, yung ‘Stolen Life’, hindi na din po required ang lock-in, so back to ano na po kami… yung uwian na po.

“Uwian na po every taping day, so although mostly daily pa din ang taping, nakakauwi pa rin naman po kami sa mga bahay po namin gabi-gabi and we have more than enough time to rest po in between taping days.”

Kung ikukumpara, ano mas gusto ni Carla, ang lock-in or yung uwian na taping?

“Yung totoo po parang mas wala pong problema sa akin yung lock-in, mas ano po, parang napansin ko na yes may sacrifices po, medyo nakakalungkot na we’re away from our families ng medyo mahaba-haba pong length of time.

“Pero parang mas ano po, mas na-enjoy ko siya, mas na-appreciate ko kasi mas na-observe ko po na mas efficient po ang lahat ng tao kumilos, mas may energy, mas may lakas, mas mabilis pong natatapos yung buong show.

“Hindi na po kailangan manghula sa takbo ng kuwento, mas may time po na mailatag in terms of production, yung mga eksena, kung anu-ano pong mga kukunan, kung saan-saan and yun nga po, mas mabilis pong natatapos.

“Kaya though mahirap po being away from our families, at least shorter span of time na lang naman po and worth naman po yung sakripisyo.”

“Well it wasn’t really a dream but nung panahon namin nung high school ako na nag-CAT at tsaka COCC, ROTC, sobrang excited ako!

“I was excited to lead, also I was excited to be a follower, sumali pa ako sa rifle exhibition, sumali pa ako noon before and since yung school namin kasi sa OB Montessori sa Greenhills, may mga assigned tasks kami ako I always choose to be sa traffic.

“Ako yung nag-aano ng traffic flow sa Greenhills.

“Natutuwa ako pagdating sa ganun kasi siyempre given the fact na sikat na sikat nung araw e yung Top Gun so uso yung mga Aviator shades, ako gusto ko lang magbilad sa araw na nakasuot ng shades,” at tumawa si Gabby.

“So, kasi naka-uniform ka e so tipong, ‘O wait lang, dito ang daan, mga kotse!’

“Hindi siya dream pero nae-excite ako sa mga ganun, lalo na pagka suot mo na yung costume. The costume itself when you fit it or when you put it on gives a lot of character already.

“So mai-imbibe mo kaagad uniform pa lang, ‘Uy, I’m a general, I’m a commander, I’m a soldier!’

“Iba yung feeling so yeah, I consider it as… I get excited! I guess iyon ang, I think that’s the best term, I get excited when I put on a uniform.”

MATT DAMON STEPS INTO A SPORTS VISIONARY’S SHOES IN “AIR”

WHO is Sonny Vaccaro?

It was 1984 and Vaccaro, a basketball expert at Nike, hadn’t had much success recruiting top players to Nike’s basketball division. Converse had all but cornered the market with superstars like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Adidas, hyping its cool factor, was attracting the hot prospects from the draft, including the third pick – a guard out of the University of North Carolina named Michael Jordan. Putting his career on the line, Vaccaro decided to take the biggest gamble of his life. In an unprecedented move, he wanted Nike to create a shoe designed specifically for Jordan.

“It is an all-or-nothing gamble, but one in which he entirely believes because he absolutely knows and loves the game,” says Matt Damon, who plays Vaccaro in the film “AIR,” in cinemas April 19. “But he’s at a point where his career is in a precarious place and Nike’s entire basketball division is on the brink. He is risking all their jobs by pushing that agenda because he’s been told Jordan really wants to go with Adidas. Their shoes are cooler, and Nike is considered a jogging shoe company that Michael doesn’t associate with basketball. Nobody really does.

“That was one of the things that was so surprising to me when I read the script,” Damon continues, “because I always had this idea of Nike as this absolute powerhouse in the basketball shoe market, which they are now. But when you catch them at the beginning of this story, they are the clear underdogs… One thing Sonny Vaccaro was very clear with me about was that the feelings of camaraderie, friendship and loyalty are his takeaways from that time. That’s what we wanted to put in the movie—a story about these underdogs doing something that had never been done before.”

Working with director Ben Affleck

Besides the inspiring story of “AIR,” Damon relished working with his longtime buddy Ben Affleck as his director. “Obviously, we’ve written and produced together over the years, but getting to work with him as a director was utter joy and so creatively rewarding,” shares Damon. “We tend to have similar sensibilities about what’s working in a scene and what isn’t, so we had such an ease with each other.”

Affleck also had only great things to say about his old pal. “He is very, very gifted and it was a pleasure to direct him for the first time and discover even more about him as an actor,” says Affleck about Damon. “I feel very lucky that my oldest friend and I are in the same line of work and get to work together. We’re doubly blessed in that way.”

DICT: Deadline ng SIM registration, Abril 26 pa rin

KINUMPIRMA kahapon ni Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy na nananatili pa ring Abril 26 ang deadline para sa mandatory registration ng mga SIM cards sa bansa.

“We like to as much as possible stick to what the law allows us to do and let’s see how the public has so far complied with what the law requires,” ayon pa kay Uy. “And as of today the deadline is still April 26.”

Kasabay nito, iniulat din ni Uy na may nakikita naman silang magandang progreso sa registration at nadadagdagan pa ang bilang ng mga rehistradong SIM cards.

Matatandaang ang SIM card registration ay sinimulan noong Disyembre 27 at nakatakdang magtapos sa Abril 26 lamang.

Nagbabala naman ang DICT na ang mga SIM cards na hindi mairerehistro bago ang deadline ay made-deactivate at hindi na magagamit pa.

Patuloy namang umaapela ang mga telecommunications firms na Globe Telecom Inc. at Smart Communications Inc. sa pamahalaan na palawigin pa ang deadline upang mabigyan ng sapat na panahon sa pagrerehistro ng SIM cards ang mga mobile users, partikular na ang mga marginalized sectors at yaong mga nasa malalayo at liblib na lugar.

Nicholas Hoult, the Downtrodden, Perpetually Abused Henchman of Dracula in ‘Renfield’

A wildly creative take on vampire mythology, “Renfield” stars Nicholas Hoult as the downtrodden, perpetually abused henchman of Dracula (Nicolas Cage).

After serving his exploitative master for decades, Renfield grapples with an everlasting-life crisis, no longer willing to do Dracula’s bidding but unsure how to forge his own path.

This changes when he meets New Orleans cop Rebecca (Awkwafina), a principled officer tackling unresolved anger issues, determined to bring down the city’s most powerful crime family, led by Bellafrancesca Lobo (Shohreh Aghdashloo) and her son Tedward (Ben Schwartz). Inspired by Rebecca’s stand for justice, Renfield envisions a brighter future, one where he might escape his nightly servitude and rejoin the living.

After more than a century of servitude, Renfield longs to be away from all-powerful Dracula, but the vampire has no intention of allowing Renfield to walk free. It’s a situation that’s left Renfield feeling largely hopeless and unhappy. The role is portrayed by Emmy nominee Nicholas Hoult. Hoult immediately zeroed in on Renfield’s emotional core. “Renfield’s just exhausted with the prospect of continuing to do Dracula’s dirty work,” Hoult says.

“He’s worn down, beaten down and looking for an escape or some sort of spark to return to his normal life and what he misses. It’s a toxic relationship between Renfield and Dracula—they’ve been together for so long and they really know how to push each other’s buttons and work against each other.”

Few actors commit to a role the way Academy Award®-winner Nicolas Cage does, and his outsized presence made him an obvious choice to take on the iconic role of Dracula. Not to mention, he had previously embraced his inner bloodsucker very early in his career, for the 1988 cult favorite Vampire’s Kiss.

For Cage, the challenge lay in tapping into the complicated dynamic between his character and Hoult’s—finding the nuances of their rapport while remaining true to both the horrific and comedic moments.

“The subject matter itself is not funny, it’s disturbing,” Cage says.

“But at the root of it, there is a kind of love there. And then there are moments where it’s just abuse. It’s the dark side of human relationships that we’re exploring in this. That’s not an easy subject to take on, and certainly, to give it the spin of comedy, it’s tricky.”

As Renfield battles his toxic relationship with Dracula, New Orleans police officer Rebecca faces her own struggles. Portrayed by Awkwafina, known for her roles in Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell, and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings, the rapport between Hoult and Awkwafina feels genuine, as both actors enjoyed working together.

“Nick Hoult is the perfect leading man,” Awkwafina says. “His energy is magnetic, and what he’s bringing to this character is a level of humor that is really hard to embody. I found myself cracking up all the time when I was working with him.”

A Universal Pictures International release, “Renfield” will open in PH cinemas on April 26.

Ngayong nasa wastong edad na: JILLIAN, mas may pressure sa sarili dahil gustong mag-improve

NGAYONG eighteen years old na si Jillian Ward na nagkaroon ng isang pabulosong debut party noong February 25 sa Cove ng Okada Manila.

Ano ang maituturing ni Jillian na malaking pagbabago sa kanyang personal na buhay ngayong disiotso anyos na siya?

“Sa totoo lang po, wala po masyado.

“Siguro po kasi since bata po ako nagwu-work na po ako, so alam ko na po yung mga responsibilities na kailangan ko pong… na naibibigay po sa akin.

“Siguro lang po mas may pressure po sa sarili ko, kasi siyempre gusto ko pong mag-improve pa, and gusto ko po na mas galingan ko pa, na mas marami pa po akong matutunan, since adult na rin po ako ngayon.

“So iyon po, mas may pressure lang po sa sarili, pero other than that po parang pareho lang din naman po.”

Karamihan sa mga bagong nagdadalaga, mas binibigyan na ng kalayaan ng kanilang mga magulang; si Jillian ba ay katulad rin ng ibang mga babae?

Mas pinapayagan na ba siyang lumabas ng medyo hatinggabi na? Pinapayagan na ba siyang magmaneho na hindi kasama ng parents niya?

Ex-PDEG chief, 48 pa kakasuhan sa P6.7 bilyong shabu ‘cover-up’

NAKATAKDANG isampa ng Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) ang kasong kriminal at administratibo laban kina dating Philippine Drug Enforcement Group (PDEG) Director BGen. Narciso Domingo at 48 pang tauhan nito kaugnay ng umano’y ‘cover-up’ sa P6.7 bilyong halaga ng shabu na nasabat mula sa lending company ni PMSgt. Rodolfo Mayo, Jr. noong nakaraang taon.

Sa isinagawang press briefing, sinabi ni PMGen. Eliseo Cruz, Director for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM) na mahaharap sa kasong criminal dahil sa paglabag sa Sections 21, 27, at 92 ng RA 9165 o Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act at grave neglect of duty at grave dishonesty sa kasong administratibo ang mga opisyal at tauhan ng PDEG kabilang si Domingo at PCol. Julian Olonan na hepe ng Region 4A.

Ayon kay Cruz, lumilitaw din sa pagsisiyasat ng Special Investigation Task Group 990 na umaabot sa mahigit 1 tonelada ang shabu. Aniya ang 990 kilo ay bahagi lamang ng umano’y kinupit ng mga tauhan ng PDEG.

“Yes it was 990 kilos, plus the 42 kilos and plus the missing. That’s the mathematical explanation on that,” ani Cruz.

Tiniyak din ni Cruz na patuloy ang kanilang imbestigasyon dahil sa lawak ng istorya ng 990 kilo ng shabu.

‘Yung pilferage, nakita na naman ‘yung mga may kasalanan kaya dapat isampa na ang mga kaso… Nai-submit na natin ito sa PNP chief at NAPOLCOM…”, dagdag pa ni Cruz.

Ibinunyag din ni Cruz na si PCapt. Jonathan Sosongco ang “nagkukumpas” sa isinagawang anti drug operation. Si Sosongco ang lider ng arresting team na nagresulta ng pagkakasabat ng shabu at pagkakaaresto kay Mayo.

Paliwanag ni Cruz, unang inakala na nasa 30 kilo ng shabu ang nawawala. Subalit nang isurender ito ni PMaster Sgt. Jerrywin Rebosora, lumitaw na umaabot sa 42 kilo ang nasa inabandonang kotse sa harap ng Camp Crame.

Makikita sa CCTV video na pinagtulungan nina Rebosora at dalawa pang pulis ang paglalagay ng maleta sa compartment ng kotse.

Bukod pa ito aniya sa pabalik-balik na motorsiklo na gamit din ng iba pang pulis.

Nilinaw din ni Cruz na malaki ang responsibilidad ni Domingo dahil mga tauhan niya ang nagsagawa ng drug operations. Ani Cruz, tila naging bulag si Domingo sa kilos at desisyon ng kanyang mga tauhan at hindi gumawa ng aksiyon upang papanagutin ang mga ito.

“You can be punished for what you have done and also can be punished by what you have not done. We expect him (Domingo) to do the thing that should have been done by a Director (of PDEG) to prevent or even the recovery of these 42. He should have addressed that,” dagdag pa Cruz.

PBBM, nakasubaybay sa pagpasok ng P3.48-T investment pledges- BOI exec

HANDS-ON si Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. sa mahigit na P3.48 trillion investment pledges para sa Maynila na na-secure sa kanyang foreign trips.

Hangad ng Pangulo na magma-materialize at makalilikha ng hanapbuhay “as soon as possible”.

Sa ginanap na Saturday News Forum sa Quezon City, sinabi ni Board of Investments (BOI) Executive Director for Investments Promotion Services Evariste Cagatan na mahigpit na naka-monitor ang Pangulo para makapagbigay ng tulong upang “fast-track” ang pagpasok ng mga investors sa bansa.

“Investment leads pa lang iyan so marami pang kailangang gawin para tuluyang matuloy ‘yong mga pledges,” ayon kay Cagatan.

Sa BOI lang, ang investment approvals mula Enero hanggang Marso ay umabot na sa P463.3 billion, tumaas ng 155% mula sa P181.7 bilyon na nakatala sa kahalintulad ng nakaraang taon.

Sinabi ni Cagatan na ang malaking bahagi ng investments ay nasa renewables.

PRC, hinikayat ang mga Bulakenyo na makiisa sa pagtaguyod ng mga makataong serbisyo

UPANG mahikayat ang mga Bulakenyo sa pakikilahok at pagtataguyod ng mga serbisyong makatao, idinaos ng Philippine Red Cross – Bulacan Chapter ang Walk for Humanity kung saan humigit-kumulang 4,100 Bulakenyo ang lumahok sa martsa na nagsimula sa Malolos Sports and Convention Center hanggang Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium sa lungsod na ito.

Alinsunod sa temang “PRC is always first, always ready, and always there in service for humanity”, inilunsad ang programa upang isulong ang programang Red Cross 143 sa lahat ng barangay sa lalawigan at hinihikayat ang bawat pamilya na magkaroon ng isang responder upang palakasin ang misyon ng PRC na magbigay ng humanitarian aid sa mga nangangailangan.
