NATIONAL Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Nora Aunor topbills ‘Mananambal,’ a riveting new horror masterpiece from director Adolf Alix, Jr., which also stars versatile young actress Bianca Umali.
Set in Siquijor, ‘Mananambal’ follows a group of ambitious content creators who journey to Sitio Cambugahay in search of Lucia (Aunor), the “mananambal” whose extraordinary healing powers have recently gone viral. A “mananambal” is a Filipino practitioner of traditional medicine, who is also capable of performing sorcery.
Their pursuit leads them to Alma (Umali), Lucia’s strong-willed daughter, who refuses to follow her mother’s path and is eager to live life on her own terms. The group’s persistence to use Alma as their way to Lucia crosses dangerous lines, leaving Alma broken and betrayed.
Upon returning to Manila, the content creators find themselves engulfed in a nightmare of inexplicable and horrifying events, with death relentlessly chasing them.
Are they victims of a mananambal’s curse, or is something far darker at play? One thing becomes terrifyingly clear: violating sacred boundaries comes with a steep price. And if there’s one rule they ought to learn—never mess with a mananambal and their kin.
Philippine cinema’s “Superstar” said that her decision to accept ‘Mananambal’ was driven by her admiration for the film’s compelling narrative and the team behind it: “Maganda ang istorya. Mababait rin ang mga tao sa production,” she shared in an interview.
Aunor’s portrayal of Lucia—a mother grappling with her duties as a healer and her protective instincts for her daughter—promises to be one of the highlights of her legendary career.
The film, rooted in Filipino culture, has already received international acclaim, having been showcased at the Jinseo Arigato International Film Festival in Japan in May 2024. At the festival, Umali was honored with the Best Dramatic Actress award for her powerful performance as Alma.
“This means the world to me,” Umali said in her acceptance speech. “This award acknowledges all of the hard work and dedication that I have poured into my craft and in this project.”
Umali also dedicated the award to the one and only La Aunor: “Karangalan ko po na makatrabaho kayo and I hope that you are here with me, maraming maraming salamat po.”
‘Mananambal’ is a testament to the rich heritage and artistry of Filipino cinema. Don’t miss this roller coaster of terror and suspense that will leave you questioning the power of curses and the price of justice. Also stars Kelvin Miranda, Edgar Allan Guzman, Jeric Gonzales, and Martin Escudero.
In cinemas nationwide on February 19, produced by BC Entertainment Productions and distributed by Viva Films.
