BRAD PITT, A SILENT MOVIE STAR AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME IN “BABYLON”
ACADEMY Award-winner Brad Pitt stars as Jack Conrad, a silver screen icon navigating the tumultuous transformation of cinema in Paramount Pictures’ critically acclaimed epic, Babylon.
A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, the film traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.

“Brad’s one of the few people today where you get some sense of what the old school movie star really might’ve been like,” says Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle (La La Land, First Man). “That sort of larger-than-life aura that a star of that time could exude seemingly effortlessly. That’s the thing with Brad, especially at this point in his career. You don’t see the work… it’s completely invisible and effortless. That’s part of what’s so magical about it.”
We first meet Jack Conrad (Pitt) when he arrives at the Wallach party with his soon-to-be ex-wife, Ina (Olivia Wilde). Jack evokes the likes of John Gilbert, Douglas Fairbanks and Rudolph Valentino, leading men of the silent movie era. When he makes his entrance at the party, Jack feels like the adult in the room, but it’s clear that he is ready to partake in the festivities if the right situation comes along.
“Jack is sort of the uber movie star,” says Chazelle. “He’s the highest grossing leading man in the world when we meet him. He’s one of those guys who has reached the apogee of stardom right at that moment, and the kind of hysterical love and admiration that he inspires, at a moment in time when the whole concept of movie stardom was still relatively new, is really hard for us today to fathom.”
In a throng of admirers, Jack knows just enough about everybody in the room to address them and make them feel special, even for a brief moment, without pausing for a beat on his way to the bar. Everyone wants a word with or a glance from the most famous man in the movies.
“Having him play a movie star of this era felt meta in the most beautiful way,” says Chazelle. “But it also gave us something to collaborate on together, because the story became a canvas that he could inform with his own experiences, so that you could see the humanity underneath — the vulnerability, the insecurity.”
To play a silent film star, Pitt also did his own research. “I went back and studied. I watched a lot of Gilbert, Fairbanks, and Valentino. There’s a real charm in those performances,” says Pitt. “Silent films didn’t have dialogue to rely on, they only had the occasional title card, so the performances have a style to them that’s different than what we have now.”
In cinemas across the Philippines starting February 1st, Babylon is distributed by Paramount Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Mga nairehistrong sim cards sa bansa, umabot na sa mahigit 22-M – NTC
MAHIGIT 22.2 million SIM cards ang nairehistro na, tatlong linggo makaraang simulan ang mandatory registration period, ayon sa National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
Sinabi ni NTC Officer-in-Charge Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez, na umabot na sa 22,298,090 ang SIM card registrants, as of Enero 18, o katumbas ng 13.20 percent ng kabuuang 168 million active SIM subscribers sa bansa.
Sa 22.2 million, ang Smart Communications Inc. ang may pinakamalaking bilang ng registrants na mahigit 11.1 million, sumunod ang Globe Telecommunications na may mahigit 9.3 million at DITO Telecommunity na may mahigit 1.8 million.
Samantala, sa pulong ng Inter-Agency Ad Hoc Comittee For Facilitation of SIM registration in Remote areas, iprinisinta ng NTC sa member agencies at telcos ang listahan ng mga lugar na tinukoy ng kanilang sim registration act task force bilang remote.
Inihayag ni Lopez na kabuuang 45 remote areas ang tinukoy mula sa 15 rehiyon sa bansa.
Nagsimula ang mandatory SIM card registration noong Disyembre 27, 2022, alinsunod sa Republic Act No. 11934 o SIM Registration Act.

50% ng NAIA flights ilipat sa Clark sa 2025
NAIS ng isang mambabatas na mailipat ang nasa 50% ng flights sa Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) sa Clark International Airport (CIA) pagdating ng 2025.
Ayon kay Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan, ito ay sa panahon na rin sa tinatayang full recovery ng global air travel mula sa COVID-19 pandemic.
“Assuming all flights are divided evenly between NAIA and Clark by 2025, only half of all flights would be cancelled, diverted or delayed in the event of a sudden emergency in either gateway,” anang mambabatas.
Halimbawa aniya, kapag nagkaroon muli ng air traffic system glitch sa NaIA o nagkaroon ng aberya ang isang malaking eroplano sa runway ay nasa 50% ng lahat ng flights ang maapektuhan dahil ang kalahati ay nananatiling nasa operasyon sa Clark.
“We have no choice but to fully harness Clark, which has been up and running for years. Clark is capable of operating more flights, offers good connectivity to Metro Manila via modern expressways, and is only 90 kilometers away from Quezon City,” pahayag ni Libanan.
Noong nakalipas na linggo, inihayag ng civil aviation officials sa House transportation committee na fully functional na ngayon ang air traffic system ng NAIA.
Sa pagtataya ng International Air Transport Association (IATA), inaasahang na tumaas ang turista o biyahero sa 82% ng pre-pandemic level ngayong taon, 92% sa 2024 at 101% sa 2025.
Inihayag pa ng mambabatas na hindi solusyon ang planong pagsasapribado ng DOTr sa NAIA para maresolbahan ang congestion sa airport.
Ang problema aniya ng NAIA ay kakulangan ng lupa para sa expansion dala na rin sa pagiging highly urbanized ng mga lugar na nakapaligid sa airport. (Ara Romero)
PBBM, walang papel sa Maharlika fund bill revision
WALANG papel si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sa revision o ginawang pagbabago sa House of Representatives-approved Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) bill.
Isang bagong Maharlika Investment Fund kasi ang iprinisenta ni Pangulong Marcos sa potential investors sa ginanap na World Economic Forum sa Davos, Switzerland.
Ito ang ibinahagi ni House Ways and Means Committee Chair Joey Salceda sa isang panayam.
Ayon kay Salceda, siya at tatlong iba pang mambabatas ay naatasan na i-rewrite ang MIF proposal.
Isa aniya sa pagbabago mula sa House Bill 6608 na ipinasa ng Kamara ay hindi na gagamiting kapital ang dibidendo mula sa Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas at “real surpluses” na aniya ang gagamitin tulad ng sa isang tradisyunal na sovereign wealth fund.
Masaya naman si Salceda na sa kabila ng pagtutol ng mga kritiko sa ginawang “soft launch” ng Pang. Marcos Jr. ng MIF sa WEF ay positibo ang naging pagtanggap ng mga investors sa bagong MIF.
Si Pangulong Marcos ay nasa Davos, Switzerland, noong nakaraang linggo Kung saan dumalo sa World Economic Forum (WEF).
At nang tanungin ng media kung ang revised MIF bill ay aprubado na niya, ang naging tugon ng Pangulo ay “I’m not sure. What did I approve?”
Winika pa ng Pangulo na ang panukalang batas ay “in the process of legislation.”
“Wala akong role muna,” ayon kay Pangulong Marcos.
Samantala, tinuran ng Pangulo na nakatanggap siya ng suhestiyon mula sa business leader na mangalap ng pera para sa Maharlika fund sa pamamagitan ng initial public offering (IPO).
Sinabi naman ng Pangulo na titingnan niya kung nararapat ito para sa bansa.
Ang panukalang batas para sa Maharlika Investment Fund ay inaprubahan sa ikatlo at pinal na pagbasa ng Mababang Kapulungan ng Kongreso noong Disyembre15. Ipinadala ito sa Senado noong Disyembre 19.
Sa ilalim ng panukalang batas, ” the fund shall be used to invest on a strategic and commercial basis in a manner designed to promote fiscal stability for economic development and strengthen the top-performing government financial institutions through additional investment platforms that will help attain the national government’s priority plans.”
Sinabi pa ng Pangulo na ang panukalang sovereign fund ay inaasahan na susuporta sa infrastructure projects sa enerhiya, agrikultura at digitalisasyon. (Daris Jose)
Matapos ang mahalagang partisipasyon sa WEF: PBBM, balik-Pinas na
NAKABALIK na ng Pilipinas si Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., araw ng Sabado matapos dumalo sa World Economic Forum sa Davos, Switzerland.
“I am pleased with the progress we have made during our crucial participation in the World Economic Forum (WEF), a truly global multi-stakeholder platform,” sa kanyang naging talumpati sa Villamor Air Base sa Pasay City.
Sinabi ng Chief Executive na ang byahe ay nagbunga ng ‘beneficial outcomes’ na may kinalaman sa “bagong kalakalan at investment opportunities, key partnerships para suportahan ang development program, mas maayos na pagpapahalaga sa mga Filipino workers at professionals, at ang pangako na itaas ang pagtutulungan sa iba’t ibang bansa sa buong mundo.
“Our WEF engagement has enabled the many leaders and experts in government, business, civil organizations, and the academe that were in attendance to receive the good news that the Philippines is leading economic recovery and performance not only in the Asia-Pacific but also in the whole world,” ang wika ng Pangulo.
“We shared our insight and experience in being resilient, hardworking people – uniting in adversity and looking out for each other in [times of] crisis. And for this, I thank you,” dagdag na pahayag ng Pangulo.
Ibinahagi rin ng Pangulo ang “work across trade and investment, monetary and fiscal policies, food and energy security, climate action, structural reforms, digitalization, public-private partnerships, health and nutrition, education, at iba pang social services” ng bansa.
“I highlighted this administration’s policies, including the Philippine Development Plan, the 8-Point Socioeconomic Agenda, and various other policies and legislation that spotlight the economic reforms of the Philippines that have led to our sustained growth, even post COVID-19 and amidst the current global economic downturn,” aniya pa rin.
Tinalakay din niya ang budget, estratehiya, polisiya, programa at mga proyekto para sa climate-resilient infrastructure at “Build, Better, More,” ng administrasyon at maging ang active policies tungo sa public-private partnerships at iba pang uri ng kolaborasyon sa infrastructure, “all this work is toward the fulfillment of a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable infrastructure ecosystem for the Philippines.”
Ginamit din niya ang oportunidad “to consult with our friends and partners in Davos on the sovereign wealth fund as a means for us to diversify our income sources, and to generate various welfare effects for the Filipino people.”
“And that discussion about the sovereign wealth fund, the Maharlika Fund, was an interactive one wherein not only did we present our ideas on what the fund should look like, but we asked them [what they thought] would be most advantageous for the Philippines so as to allow the potential investments that you are thinking about bringing into the Philippines and how the fund would be best designed to service that investment,” aniya pa rin.
Nakipagpulong din siya kay WEF founder and chairman emeritus Klaus Schwab para pag-usapan ang “partnerships at collaboration” para tulungan ang Pilipinas na panatilihin ang “equitable and inclusive growth” at magbigay ng magandang kalidad ng buhay para sa mga Filipino.
Nakipag-usap din si Pangulong Marcos sa World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, World Bank Managing Director for Operations Axel Van Trotsenburg, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair para i-align at napagkasunduan na itulak para sa common priorities at suporta sa multilateral trading system na mapakikinabangan ng lahat.
“The process that we undertook really in Davos was not simply to highlight the new situation, the new economic situation, the new policies, and the new concepts that we are promoting in the Philippines today, but also to learn from the world leaders and the world economic leaders what part the Philippines can play in this fragmented world,” anito.
“That was the main theme in this entire forum, how do we bring back cooperation in a fragmented world, and we are seen to play a part in that, especially as a member state of ASEAN and as a leading economy in Asia,” dagdag na pahayag nito.
Ang business meetings ay nagbigay ng pangako para sa bagong investments sa economic sectors, kabilang na ang mining at processing, digital solutions, logistics, telecommunications, at renewable fuels.
“We now will be working to consolidate and develop these contacts and discussions that we have begun. The measure of success will be how much of this we can bring to fruition. Tawang-tawa si Isko sa kuwento na nagpakalalaki noon: VICE GANDA, gusto nang magka-anak kaya balak magpa-surrogate
ANG pagiging parehong laking Tondo nila ang isa sa dahilan kung bakit si Vice Ganda ang ininterview ng former Manila Mayor na si Isko Moreno.
Aliw ang mga reaction ni Isko lalo na nang malaman nito na nagkaroon pala ng mga girlfriends si Vice noong araw.
“Nagka-girlfriend ako. Lima,” sey niya na ikinagulat ni Isko.
Pero ayon kay Vice, ever since, alam niya na bakla siya. Pero kaya raw siya nagge-girlfriend noon dahil gusto niyang ma-cure ang pagka-bakla niya.
“I’m trying to cure it, until I realized na bakit ko icu-cure, e, hindi naman ito sakit. Hindi naman siya disability. Hindi naman siya nagbabago.
“Nagge-girlfriend lang ako, pero hindi naman ako nagbabago. Bakla talaga ‘ko. Hindi ko kayang humalik. Hindi ko kayang humawak sa dede.”
Tawang-tawa si Isko at parang naa-amuse sa kuwento ni Vice sa side nito noon na nagpapakalalaki pa.
Kuwento pa ni Vice, kasama raw niyang manood sa Odeon Theater noon sa Avenida ang girlfriend at parang nagpapahiwatig ito na i-kiss daw niya. Kiniss naman daw niya, pero hindi raw talaga niya kaya ang ‘momol.’
Sey ni Vice, “Hindi ko talaga kaya ang momol. Nilagay niya ang kamay sa dede niya, do’n ko talaga na-realize na bakla talaga ‘ko.”
Pagdating sa jowaan ng lalaki, though kasal na si Vice kay Ion Perez, late bloomer raw siya sa jowang lalaki.
Pero sila ni Ion, okay raw talaga sila.
“Okay naman kami. Masaya. Masayang-masaya. Mapayapa. Although hindi siya perfect. Marami kaming pinagdadaanan. Nagtatalo rin kami. Pero never kaming nag-away nang malalang away.”
Nag-iba na rin ang mindset ni Vice ngayon. Dati, ayaw nitong magkaroon ng anak. Pero ngayon, gusto na raw niya.
“Oo, surprisingly, gusto ko ng magka-anak. Dati, as in, no-no ako diyan.”
Biological child daw ang gusto ni Vice kaya magpapa-surrogate ito.
“Dati talaga, no-no, kahit nga mag-a-adopt. Ayoko kasing i-subject ang magiging anak ko sa social injustices, discrimination. Kahit anong gawin natin, iba ang tingin ng mga tao kapag ang Tatay niya, bakla.
“So, naaawa ako sa bata.”
Nagbago raw ang mindset niya nang makilala niya si Ion at nakikita niya kunt gaano kaganda ang relasyon nila.
“Sabi ko, kaya naming magka-baby. Tapos sabi ko, gusto ko siyang buuin talaga at bigla na lang, instantly, sabi ko, gusto ko ng magka-baby. Wala na ‘kong pakialam kung ano sasabihin nila. Ang mahalaga na lang, ibi-build ko ang personality, ang character ng anak ko.”

EMOSYONAL si Rabiya Mateo habang nagbi-video ng kanyang sarili at ipinapakita ang bagong bahay na nabili niya.
Ayon kay Rabiya, para raw sa pamilya sa Iloilo ang kauna-unahang bahay na naipundar niya.
Sabi nga niya, “I’m kinda getting emotional kasi, looking back din, parang it’s impossible for us na magkaroon ng sariling bahay. Kasi, nagre-rent lang kami, no permanent address din. Nakailang lipat na rin ng bahay and God has been so good to me and to my family.
“Sa lahat ng blessing na pumasok talaga, God has been so good.”
Umaasa rin siya na mas mapapaganda pa raw sana niya ang nabiling bahay. May payo rin siya sa mga tulad niyang breadwinner.
Sey niya, “Sa mga breadwinner diyan, alam kong minsan nakakapagod din na maraming taong umaasa sa ‘yo, but set it as s fuel to strive harder talaga. Super sarap sa feeling to be able to provide sa mga taong mahal mo.”
Inisa-isa rin pasalamatan ni Rabiya ang lahat ng endorsements niya, Sparkle at mga taong nakatulong daw sa kanya at nagtiwala simula pa sa journey niya sa Miss Universe.

Investment hub ng Pilipinas matagumpay na naibida sa 2023 World Economic Forum
MATAGUMPAY na naiparating ng Pilipinas sa World Economic Forum na bukas ang ating bansa sa mga negosyo.
Ayon kay House Speaker Martin Romualdez, naibida ng Philippine delagation sa World Economic Forum attendees ang pagiging premier investment hub ng Pilipinas.
Punto ni Speaker Romualdez na maraming multinational company na ang nagpa-planong magtayo ng opisina sa ating bansa, kabilang dito ang Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, Ferrovial at Sequoia.
Ito ay dahil sa magandang investment climate ng Pilipinas at kakayanan ng mga Pilipino sa pagta-trabaho.
Sabi ni Speaker, nagawang i-impressed ng Philippine delegation ang mga dumalo sa World Economic Forum dahil sa ipinakitang pagkakaisa.
“So people took notice of it and said that its obvious that the Philippines is back. We are open for business, we are here listening and we are inviting everyone to see why the Philippines would be the best destinations to invest,” pahayag ni Speaker Romualdez.
Napansin din ni Speaker Romualdez na marami ang nagpahayag ng interes sa Davos kaugnay sa isinusulong na Maharlika Investment Fund.
“So we demonstrate at the WEF and to the world that the President is joined with his economic managers in the Executive alongside with the leaders from the Legislature and we are working and marching in lockstep with him,” pahayag ni Romualdez. (Daris Jose)

Sinabi ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na bagama’t kasalukuyang hinihimay ang panukalang Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) sa Kongreso, sisiguruhin niya na ang pagkakatatag nito ay may mapapala o may maaaning benepisyo para sa bansa.
“We have to design it very specifically to the Philippine condition. And that’s what the legislators are trying to do now – to make sure na babagay para sa atin and it will be a good thing for us. So that’s the process that we’re undergoing now,” ayon kay Pangulong Marcos sa isang panayam bago pa bumalik sa Pilipinas.
Nauna rito, nagsagawa ng soft launch ang Pangulo sa MIF sa idinaos na Philippines’ Country Strategy Dialogue sa World Economic Forum (WEF) sa Davos, Switzerland, araw ng Martes.
Ang panukalang lumikha ng MIF para sa Pilipinas ay nakakuha ng suporta mula sa WEF participants.
Ang pondo ayon kay Pangulong Marcos ay gagamitin para i-diversify o pag-iba-ibahin and financial portfolio ng bansa.
Winika pa ng Pangulo na mayroon din aniyang suhestiyon mula sa business leader na mangalap at makapag-ipon ng pera para sa panukalang wealth fund sa pamamagitan ng initial public offering (IPO), proseso kung saan pinapayagan ang private corporation na magbenta ng kanilang shares of stock sa publiko sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon.
Aniya, kakalkulahin niya ang rekumendasyon kung nararapat sa bansa.
“You know, going on about the fund, the more we study it, the more it is clear that although the sovereign wealth funds around the world have the same name, they’re all very different,” ayon sa Pangulo sabay sabing“They’re different in purpose, they’re different in methodology and of course, they operate in a different context of law.” (Daris Jose)
